Lady

What a great idea! Using some old corrugated iron and turning it into a sculptural form, the shape of which was suggested by the material. This is what Kate Blacker has done in Madame Dupont Relaxing. She has painted a Matisse-style lady in a relaxed and open position, lounging on the crate with her arm over her head, opening her gaze and her orientation to the world.

The three dimensionality of the work is great

And I was drawn by the vibrancy of the colours. I love the lightness of the piece and its joy, both of which are a sharp contrast to the heaviness of Rodin’s Eve

More than anything, I love the play of ideas and materials.

Well done Southampton City Art Gallery. Great curating and great art.
