At first I was puzzled as to why there were umbrellas strung across various streets in Cherbourg, when I was there last week. At the time I didn’t connect it to the D Day commemorations that were advertised there. Then a saw a programme and the many parachutes that ferried people and equipment onto the the beaches before the assault that reclaimed the land for the French. And I thought how these umbrellas resembled them in some small way. Arcs of the hope and freedom. To honour the bravery of many, and in celebration of freedom and goodness.
