Hatt and Watch

My last few posts have shown various sculptures on the harbour side at Watchet, Somerset. While I was in Taunton, the county town of Somerset, I came across a delightful exhibition of paintings by Doris Hatt, who herself, had been enchanted by Watchet and which she painted. Above is her painting of Watchet in 1960.

Prior to that, she had painted Watchet in 1954 in the style of Fernand Leger, whose paintings she had seen at the Tate Gallery, London in 1950.

Doris Hatt lived through some very turbulent times (1890-1969), yet she wanted to keep hope and expectation alive through the use of colour. ‘I aim to paint not the anxiety and chaos of our time but to express the order, tranquility and harmony we all longest for.’

The exhibition of her work at the Museum of Somerset is delightful. If you can get there before its ending on 29th June, you will be in for a treat.
