On the harbour at Poole, Dorset, this marvellous sculpture by Sir Anthony Caro, invites you to pause a while and view the sea and listen to its music. The curves and arcs of the sculpture give the structure a dynamism which reflects the dynamism of the sea – that ever changing element of many different moods. That the structure has steps built into it, enabling us to get to different viewing levels, shows the intention of the sculptor to get us to participate in this art, and have our experience altered – however briefly – through a different perspective. The seats on the different levels invite us to rest and share space with other viewers. This is the best of sculpture – giving me the chance to think about things differently – freeing my mind, but also transforming public space making it a place of connection.
