Love thyself

This beautiful rug is about Gavin Turk the sculptor and it is by him! Mimicking the English Heritage Blue Plaques that are dotted around London marking the trail of living or working places of significant people, Turk weaves his own rug in celebration of himself and his work. This is wonderfully witty and the complete opposite of having a self-effacing attitude of oneself. Whether we have brought a new thing into the world through art or making, or made connections with people that make where we live a friendlier place, we all deserve to celebrate such things. And in case we were thinking that such an attitude is egotistical, which it could be, we need also to point out that if we don’t love ourselves then we can’t love anyone else. The wise words of Jesus ring true through the centuries on this point, ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself’. Maybe today is a good time to begin : think about something today that you are really pleased you did or said, and celebrate it. And maybe tomorrow you’ll be able to celebrate what someone else did too 🙂
