The Swallows Depart

This beautiful painting by Annie Ovenden caught my attention when I saw it at St Barbe’s art gallery at the weekend. The different textures she creates through the variety of techniques she uses can only really be appreciated when you are in the presence of the painting.

I drew a little sketch to record these methods:

The curved lines of the ploughed field are augmented by the stripes of orange and brown, with flecks of green for the new growth arising from the soil. The bank of trees in the middle ground comprises blocks of brown with pale black cross hatching. The main tree on the left is in silhouette. The foreground tree has lines and scratchings that show the bark. The blue hills give way to paler blue shapes marking a receding landscape. The pale peach sky is daubed all over with delicate blobs of white to make it look translucent. And in sharp precision is the detailing of shape and colour of the swallows.

I was entranced!
